SMERC Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

Electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in parking lots and structures throughout campus have been fitted with EVSmartPlugs™ as part of a study being conducted by UCLA’s Smart Grid Energy Research Center (SMERC). These plug-in devices perform remote monitoring and control of EV charging, collecting critical data such as energy consumption and information on the particular vehicles being charged. The study aims to reduce energy costs and usage, as well as increase the stability of local power systems.

EVSmartPlugs™ are maintained by SMERC, and are only available to participants who have volunteered to be in the study, except for one public smart charging station located in Structure 4 (sponsored by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power).

Current SMERC EV charging locations are listed below:

Parking StructureNumber of StationsNumber of Ports
2 (Level 2)28
3 (South, Level 2)14
4 (Level 1)28
4 (Level 3 fast charger available for public use)11
9 (Level 4)14
9 (Level 6)14
18 (Level A2)28

The demonstration and results of this study will provide vast amounts of data and knowledge to facilitate an effective and large-scale rollout of grid-integrated EVs across the region and the country.
